AHRC Doctoral Training Event

Two-day residential event, 18-19 January 2007, York

Who? The programme is aimed at first and second year research students (full-time and part-time) undertaking research - in Biblical Studies; History and Philosophy of Science, Technology and Medicine; Philosophy; Religious Studies; and/or Theology - in a university located in Yorkshire / North East. It is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, coordinated by the Subject Centre for Philosophical and Religious Studies and facilitated by academics in university departments.

What? This is a new, free programme that seeks to provide subject-specific support for sharpening skills in researching, writing, presenting and publishing.

When? There will be a two-day residential on 18-19 January 2007 held in York. A follow-up, one-day research conference will take place at the University of Sheffield in June 2007 (date to be announced).

Why? This is an excellent opportunity to meet others working in your field and to learn more about the following:

  • Research methods and trends
  • Delivering presentations
  • Ways to improve academic writing
  • How to get published
  • Building a bibliography
  • Careers and employability

Feedback from research students who attended last year's programme:

  • "Advice was very frank, specific and up-to-date...I wish there'd been one of these events earlier in my PhD (I'm writing up)."
  • "Extremely useful... lovely people... a rare exhibition of enthusiasm and passion for academia from presenters and participants alike. A welcome and valuable experience and opportunity to meet people and discuss / reflect upon our careers."
  • "I hope further events like this one will take place in the future, as I found it a highly valuable experience and am sure many others will too."

Although the programme is FREE (accommodation and meals are also FREE), you must register for a place by Friday the 8th of December. We welcome applications from all students; however AHRC-funded students will be given first priority.
