Primary audience: PG tutors, early career lecturers, teaching staff interested in methods of student engagement

This workshop aims to identify and explore techniques for enhancing students' participation in philosophical debate. It can be run with a focus on practical issues – 'how do we encourage students to discuss philosophically?' – or on considerations of curriculum design.

Participants will:

• Share experiences of small group teaching, and explore diverse models of seminar practice used by other philosophy and HPS departments.
• Analyse key ingredients in fostering effective discussions.
• Discuss the merits and challenges of adopting or adapting the different techniques explored.
