It is generally accepted that, whilst the goal of students thinking actively for themselves is fundamental to a philosophical degree course, this is becoming harder to achieve for various reasons, such as student attitudes, pre-HE teaching methods and increasing evaluation of individual teachers in terms of examination results and student questionnaires. This workshop looks at how we can modify teaching and assessment to maximise independent thought.

It covers:

  • The nature of active and independent thinking.
  • Barriers to fostering independent thought in university education.
  • Tactics to overcome these barriers and encourage students to think for themselves.
