Primary audience: early career teachers, course designers

In philosophy and HPS courses, many students experience nothing other than traditional essays and sat examinations. However, there may be good reasons for increasing the range of methods: in particular, to reward students’ individual strengths, and to ensure that all the learning outcomes in programme specifications are actually tested and certified.

The workshop discusses:

  • The purposes of assessment.
  • The relationship between methods of teaching and methods of assessment.
  • Limitations of traditional methods.
  • Suggestions for alternative methods and means of ensuring their reliability.
