Details:

This one day event was aimed at those who are relatively new to teaching, or those who are planning to begin a career in academia in the UK, working in the following areas:

•    Philosophy
•    Religious Studies
•    Theology
•    Biblical Studies
•    History & Philosophy of Science, Technology & Medicine

It offered an opportunity for aspiring academics to gather and share information and advice, and to develop the skills necessary for a successful academic career. The event was aimed both at those already teaching and researching in departments, and those hoping to start their academic careers soon. It also provided delegates with a chance to meet fellow academics from all over the country.

The event included a panel on ‘Views of the 21st century research landscape’. The panellists were Professor Jonathan Wolff (Department of Philosophy, University College London), Dr Mathew Guest (Department of Theology and Religion, Durham University), and Dr Joe Cain (Department of Science and Technology Studies, University College London). Professor Wolff gave an address on the systems and structures supporting research: the RAE and the REF; Dr Guest presented on funding, including collaborative and interdisciplinary opportunities; and Dr Cain spokeabout the conference scene, and maximising your academic capital by using research networks. Subject Centre staff also ran sessions on curriculum design and career planning.

Comments from evaluation forms include:

  • ‘I found the event very useful in terms of knowing what steps to take towards achieving my goals in the academic world.’
  • ‘I gained enormously from the talks on the research landscape…I felt this was much-need information, open and frank in style’
  • ‘Several important issues, which I had never thought of, were presented in an impressively accessible way!’
  • ‘A really good event.’
