Development of case based teaching materials for inter-disciplinary ethics teaching about donation under the new Human Tissue Acts

Dr Sue Roff

Department of Medical Education, University of Dundee

Start date: September 2005

New religious, philosophical and applied ethics issues arise out of the forthcoming Human Tissue Acts in the UK. Course materials will be developed for inter-disciplinary education for the organ transplant coordination team which commonly consists of religious and social work counselors as well as health professionals. £1500 is sought for the costs of 12 telephone interviews / transcription with organ donors, which will form the basis of the ethical scenarios of the teaching materials. The materials will be piloted in ethics classes at the University of Dundee and then disseminated in print and electronic form by experienced teaching materials developers.

One of the results of this project was a paper written for Discourse, volume 7, number 2 (Spring 2008), 'Commodification of Body Parts, Tissues and Fluids: Background Briefing'.
