Following his retirement as Director in July 2009, George is continuing his involvement with the Subject Centre as a Senior Adviser.

He was responsible for a number of innovations in the Department of Philosophy under the Enterprise in Higher Education Initiative, in particular the proctorial system, independent study, and project work. More recently he has placed the materials for a number of modules on the internet, and he has developed ways of making on-line texts easier and more convenient to read. He has also devised methods for improving the quality and timeliness of feedback to students, and for making it virtually impossible for students to plagiarise.

In 2004, he was presented with an Award of Merit for 'outstanding leadership and achievements in the teaching of philosophy' by the American Association of Philosophy Teachers. In 2005, he was awarded a University of Leeds Teaching Fellowship, which he is using to develop electronic aids to the reading of difficult texts. In 2006, he was one of 50 academics in England and Northern Ireland to be awarded a National Teaching Fellowship in recognition of his national and international leadership role. In 2007, he became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Among other organisations, he is a member of the American Association of Philosophy Teachers, and the Association Internationale des Professeurs de Philosophie.

His publications on the teaching of philosophy are accessible from his list of publications. http://www.philosophy.leeds.ac.uk/GMR/index.html
