David is responsible for the operational efficiency of the Subject Centre. He manages its financial and human resources. He oversees the entire output of the Subject Centre and is responsible for reporting on its effectiveness and impact.
David is editor of Discourse.
With the philosophy team he has responsibility for philosophy and for history and philosophy of science (HPS) for the Centre. He carries out departmental visits and is active in planning and overseeing events in philosophy and philosophy of science as well as generic workshops and conferences.
He helped launch, design and co-edit Philosophical Writings, an international journal of philosophy for which he is now editor for metaphysics and philosophy of religion. He holds management qualifications from the Open University and is studying for an MBA degree. He is also involved in the development of a diverse but coherent approach to information and knowledge management in the PRS Subject Centre and across the HE sector as a whole.
David has been lecturer and tutor on a wide range of philosophy, history and HPS courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level, at the University of Durham (1994-9), and Birkbeck College, University of London (1999-2000). His research interests cover metaphysics, philosophy of mind, philosophy of science (especially philosophy of biology), formal logic and critical thinking. He has published on the philosophy of biology, technology, philosophy of science and the environment.
David is also interested in counselling and psychotherapy and the contribution of philosophy to helping and healing in this way.
David is interested in the teaching of philosophy in non-academic settings and its role in society - especially with regard to green agendas. He is also promoting the wider use of biology in teaching philosophy of science.
